"Because
we need memory to build the future"
Rochefort:
this 17th century new city owes its founding to Colbert's decision
to build a new arsenal for the Kingdom of France on the banks of the
Charente, in order to construct, arm, supply and repair a war fleet
capable of resisting enemy attack.
Today, Rochefort is inventing itself a new future but one based on
a patrimony that is unique in the world - the Corderie Royale, which
was restored after 20 years of hard work. The gem of the former Arsenal,
it features unique double dry docks, the oldest of which dates back
to the 17th century.
If the reconstruction of an 18th
century sailing vessel is part of the quest for the town's identity,
it's aim is also to give France a testimony from its naval past, while
at the same time act as a symbol of Franco-American fraternity through
a ship that has linked its name with that of a man - La Fayette, himself
a symbol of French support to the American revolution.
